12. Dweezil Zappa

Our first episode of 2024 has the one and only Dweezil Zappa joining Jackson on Guess That Record! The son of legendary musician Frank Zappa, Dweezil followed in his footsteps to become a master guitarist and composer in his own right, releasing six studio albums over the course of his career. He’s also carried on the legacy of his father’s music by fronting the successful group Zappa Plays Zappa. In this episode, Jackson and Dweezil talk about how he learned guitar under the tutelage of Eddie Van Halen, Frank Zappa’s greatest hits, and how he managed to earn a part in an Arnold Schwarzenegger film.

Episode 30 of Guess That Record has Jackson speaking with longtime music executive Pete Ganbarg! Pete was in charge of A&R at Atlantic Record for 16 years, and has worked with artists like Santana, Twenty One Pilots, Run DMC, Donna Summer, and Chaka Khan. He now runs his own company called Pure Tone Music, and is the host of the Rock & Roll High School Podcast where he interviews legendary figures in contemporary music. In the episode, Jackson and Pete talk about how he ended up in A&R, what it’s like to work for a historic label like Atlantic, and the creation of his podcast.
